On Thursday, September 12, the Queens Chamber of Commerce, the oldest and largest business association in Queens, announced Twist It Top It as the winner of its inaugural Queens’ Best Frozen Dessert Competition. The contest kicked off on August 29 and asked dessert lovers to nominate and vote for their favorite establishments serving up frozen treats from across the borough, with the Howard Beach eatery emerging as the winner.

“As we wind down the summer season and welcome fall, we have tallied the votes, and Queens residents have made their choice. We are delighted to honor Twist It Top It as the inaugural winner of the Queens’ Best Frozen Dessert competition,” said Tom Grech, President and CEO of the Queens Chamber of Commerce. “Congratulations to the entire team on their win! As we all know, frozen treats aren’t just for summertime, so I suggest everyone check them out!”

“We are truly honored and humbled to have been voted by the people of Queens as the winner of the Chamber’s Best Frozen Dessert Competition. For the past 12 years, our family-owned business has proudly served this community. What began as a small frozen yogurt shop has grown into a destination for dessert lovers of all kinds,” said co-owners John Gurino and Joseph Russo. “We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our incredible team, whose dedication makes Twist It Top It a warm, welcoming, and enjoyable place for everyone. From using the freshest ingredients to ensuring every customer has a memorable experience, they are the heartbeat of what we do. If you haven’t had the chance yet, come visit Twist it Top it in Howard Beach and experience for yourself why we were voted the best in the borough!”

Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. attended the event and said, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Twist It Top It for being named the winner of the inaugural Queens’ Best Frozen Dessert Competition. My family and I have been a big fan of Twist It Top It ever since its initial opening. This recognition not only highlights the incredible talent and creativity of our local businesses, but also showcases the vibrant culinary scene that makes Queens so unique. Supporting our local establishments is essential for our community’s growth and development. I appreciate Twist It Top It being an important part of our community. Let's continue to celebrate and uplift the hard work of all our local entrepreneurs."

Other elected officials representing the Howard Beach area also weighed in on the win.

“Queens is the culinary capital of the world but no meal is complete without dessert, and no borough does dessert better than ours,” said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. “Twist It Top It in Howard Beach is a big reason for that and a deserving winner of the Queens Chamber of Commerce’s inaugural Best Frozen Dessert competition. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!”

"Congratulations to Twist It Top It for being named the winner of the inaugural Queens’ Best Frozen Dessert Competition,” said Senator Roxanne J. Persaud. “It’s clear that Queens residents have a sweet spot for this Howard Beach gem!”

"District 32 has the best of everything; we have the best pizza, best barbecue, and now the best frozen dessert. We are the triple crown winners,” said Councilwoman Joann Ariola. "I'm glad I voted because I personally go to Twist It Top It with my family whenever I can, and I'm glad to know that the team there is getting the recognition they deserve.”

In total, residents nominated 14 businesses for this contest, and after nearly 1,000 votes were tallied, Twist It Top It was selected as the winner.

The top three businesses selected by the public were:

  1. Twist It Top It (Cross Bay Boulevard, Howard Beach)
  2. Mara’s Ice Cream Parlor (Rockaway Beach Boulevard, Rockaway Beach)
  3. LuLu’s Bakery (Union Turnpike, Fresh Meadows)

In addition to earning the title of Queens’ Best Frozen Dessert eatery, Twist It Top It received a plaque and a complimentary year of membership to the Queens Chamber of Commerce. The second and third-place winners also received certificates.

This is the eighth “Best of Queens” food competition. Prior contests settled debates over the borough’s best pizza, burgers, halal, empanadas, barbecue, tacos, and bagels.
